Serena Williams is one of the most decorated athletes of all time. The tennis legend has enjoyed an incredible career that recently concluded following this year’s U.S. Open. The emotional final match was one watched by the entire world as a fitting send-off to the icon. Taking place in Flushing, Queens, Serena went toe to toe against Ajla Tomljanovic in her third and file match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The day concluded with Williams making an emotional speech thanking her supporters over the years and shouting out her sister Venus for being along with her for the ride. “It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on in my life; I’m just so grateful because you got me here,” Williams told reporters following the match. “I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus,” she said, as the cameras cut to a clearly emotional and proud Venus Williams.
For almost 30 years, the Williams sisters have been synonymous with the game of tennis, making their debut in 1996. Serena was only 14 at the time. By 1999 Serena had claimed her first title at the U.S. Open and would go on to win up to 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. Serena has also competed in The Olympics several times and is a four-time Gold Medalist. Throughout her entire career, she has earned upwards of $94.5 million in prize money.
Serena originally announced her retirement plans in the August issue of U.S Vogue. The gorgeous cover featured a statuesque Williams modeling a blue gown. The cover unfolded to reveal her daughter holding the train. In the interview, Serena reveals that while she struggled with the decision to leave, she knew it was time to pursue other life goals. One particular moment that stood out to Williams was overhearing her daughter playing with an interactive app in the car on their way to an appointment. When the program asked 5-year-old Olympia what she wanted to be when she grew up, Serena overhead her whisper, “I want to be a big sister.”
Williams admits that pressure to retire always felt more personal to her as a woman because men never have to choose between family and careers. She compared herself to Tom Brady and said she would have liked a career like his if she did not have the “physical responsibility to expand her family.” Williams has broken many stereotypes for women professionals. She is still one of the top athletes in the world at 41 and won the Australian Open in 2017 while two months pregnant.
However, Williams told Vogue that the time was quickly approaching for her to have to decide between continuing to grow her family or playing tennis. “I’ve been reluctant to admit that I have to move on from playing tennis. It’s like a taboo topic. It comes up, and I start to cry. I think the only person I’ve really gone there with is my therapist,” she told the publication.
Williams is the youngest of five girls and states that her sisters were always her heroes, so she felt an obligation to give her daughter a similar experience of a large family. She and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, had been planning for some time on expanding their household, and 2022 seemed like the ideal year. She recalled a time when she didn’t even want kids early on in her career. Williams thought she would either not have any children or have full-time help when she finally did. But she admits that she is incredibly hands-on with Olympia and has not been away from her more than 24hrs since she was born.
Well, now that Williams is retired, she can pour into other things. A lover of fashion, she popped out at New York Fashion Week and opened the Vogue World’s fashion show. Sporting a metallic floor-length gown and cape with her hair pulled back, the Tennis icon strutted down the cobblestone street looking confident and beautiful. While many admired her powerful walk and presence, others noted that the dress fit tight around her midsection. Is it possible that Williams has already started her baby journey for child number 2? “Is she pregnant???” asked one person. While another commented, “Beautiful baby bump awe! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️”
Based on her Vogue interview and the timing of it all, it could very well have been by design that Williams announced wanting more kids in Vogue before retiring and debuting her bump in their fashion show. Do you think Serena Williams is pregnant?
